Nova Scotia’s competitive advantage is at work for MUFG… and that competitive advantage is our people

Monday, November 25, 2019

"Nova Scotia is experiencing an interesting expansion and becoming known for its fluid, financial services, technology sectors and as a location with international reach and influence,” shares Carl Dufton, Head of Client Operations, MUFG Investor Services (MUFG), Halifax.

“With this comes positivity and optimism from both new local graduates and newcomers to the region, which drives high levels of engagement and productivity.”

MUFG is an industry leader in asset servicing, banking, and fund financing. When the team discovered Nova Scotia’s competitive advantage – an educated and experienced workforce, coupled with an influx of highly skilled and diverse newcomers from within Canada and abroad – it was clear Halifax had the potential to be a strategic growth centre.

“MUFG has capitalized on the reversal of net migration out of Nova Scotia and has been able to grow at an astonishing pace,” says Dufton. “Having been raised in Nova Scotia, I am proud of the partnerships that MUFG has established with Nova Scotia Business Inc. (NSBI), and other bodies such as Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia (ISANS), and the benefits that growth of the asset servicing industry has brought to our region in a highly geographically competitive sector.”

Much of this growth is attributed to the unique combination of local talent found right here in Nova Scotia, and the attraction of global talent seeking to establish long term roots in the province. “The MUFG Nova Scotian team stands out globally in terms of the level of education, including post-secondary degrees and professional designations, the stability of our workforce, and resilience in a highly complex environment,” explains Dufton. “The group has experienced rapid growth and continues to thrive.”

In response, NSBI has approved an amendment for further expansion to the existing MUFG business development incentive agreement in the form of a payroll rebate.

“To meet future demand, we are investing in high-quality staff that will help us to serve our clients better and continue to enhance the quality of our offering. This growth demonstrates our commitment to the industry and supports our ambition to become the leading player in the market,” says Dufton.

And with access to leading-edge universities, a time zone advantage over the United States, and travel proximity to major financial centres like New York, Chicago, and London, it’s no wonder MUFG and its people are primed for success.

The anticipated roles for this expansion consist of fund accounting, anti-money laundering, compliance, and investor relations roles.  Resumes can be sent via email to operationsrecruiting-halifax@mfsadmin.com
