Erin Kennedy, research technologist for BioMedica Diagnostics Inc., never expected to land her dream job in her backyard. But that’s precisely what happened when she discovered her former neighbour and biochemistry professor, Dr. Abdullah Kirumira, was on the hunt for research technologists at his growing, Windsor-based biotechnology firm.
“My field is highly specialized,” says Kennedy, who graduated from Acadia University with a degree in nutrition in 2003. “I always thought I’d have to move away to find a job where I could be at the forefront of my field.”
That changed when she moved back to her hometown of Windsor to take a research job with BioMedica Diagnostics in 2009. Kennedy says the opportunity to work with an internationally-recognized scientist-turned-entrepreneur, and to be part of a company whose work is empowering physicians to accurately diagnose and treat hundreds of illnesses, is “hugely rewarding.”
“There are tremendous career opportunities in the biotech sector in Nova Scotia,” she says. “I’m committed to helping grow this company, and this industry, here in my home community.”
