One of Stellarton's most successful homegrown companies, WearWell Garments, is celebrating 30 years of success and plans to expand.
WearWell Garments manufactures and supplies customized work clothes for institutional, food service, industrial and corporate markets.
The company's clients span industries from offshore oil and gas to national grocers. WearWell employs 85 people and plans to create up to 20 new jobs in the next five years.
The province, through Nova Scotia Business Inc., is supporting WearWell Garments with a payroll rebate set at a maximum of $332,500.
Ron Chisholm, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, made the announcement today, Oct. 16, on behalf of Economic Development Minister Angus MacIsaac. Mr. Chisholm was joined by Stirling MacLean, president of WearWell Garments, and Stephen Lund, president and CEO of NSBI.
"Strong, homegrown companies keep jobs in our communities and create new opportunities in regions throughout Nova Scotia," said Mr. Chisholm. "The province and NSBI are committed partners with businesses like WearWell Garments in making smart investments in the future."
The five-year rebate through NSBI is tied to WearWell Garments retaining its existing workforce and creating the 20 new jobs. The investment also complements the company's own investments.
The company is investing in equipment, manufacturing improvements
and employee training to increase its competitiveness.
"The need to focus on improving productivity has never been more immediate," said Mr. MacLean. "We look forward to positive results from our efforts."
Current economic conditions, including the value of the Canadian dollar and rising transportation costs, are leading many exporters to find new ways to improve productivity and reduce costs.
"Nova Scotia is competing and winning in the global economy," said Mr. Lund. "In times of economic uncertainty, we need to continue to invest in our people and support companies like WearWell Garments as it makes these crucial investments."
Nova Scotia Business Inc. is Nova Scotia's private-sector-led business development agency. NSBI is the investment attraction arm of the province and helps businesses in Nova Scotia meet growth potential through advisory services, trade development, financing and venture capital.
