Nova Scotia-based Nicom IT Solutions Inc. is expanding its product line, increasing its workforce and exploring new export markets.
The software development and service company has developed a line of custom management software for port and pilotage authorities. The software will streamline port operations and increase security for the movement of containers. With the development of the new software, Nicom IT expects to grow and expand its export markets.
"As the company grows its business, it will create high-paying employment opportunities in Nova Scotia's IT industry and contribute to the province's overall economic growth," said Percy Paris, Minister for Economic and Rural Development.
To support Nicom IT's expansion, the province, through Nova Scotia Business Inc. (NSBI), and Nicom IT have signed a five-year payroll rebate to a maximum of $529,200. The payroll rebate is to support creating up to 40 new jobs over five years.
Nicom IT began as a merger between two Halifax-based companies that focused on providing IT services and consulting to the local market. It later recognized growth opportunities and in 2007 it started to work with NSBI Trade Development team, using a variety of the programs available for Nova Scotia exporters. Having participated in numerous trade missions, the company has been able to successfully market its services and products and generate business beyond Nova Scotia.
"This support will enable us to hire the skilled labour needed to grow our product offerings and promote our technology to new, targeted markets," said Pat d'Entremont, partner of Nicom IT.
The new roles will be primarily software-development, technical support and sales positions to expand its product line and reach new markets around the world.
“This is a great example of how trade and investment attraction work together to create growth opportunities for domestic businesses,” said Stephen Lund, president and CEO of NSBI. “We want to work with more companies in Nova Scotia that recognize the existing opportunities beyond our backdoor and help them go for it – just like Nicom did.”
Established in 2006 as a merger between Nicom Limited and DDA Solutions Inc., Nicom's primary focus has been on developing software and providing support for the domestic market.
Nova Scotia Business Inc. is Nova Scotia's private-sector-led business development agency. NSBI is the investment attraction arm of the province and helps businesses in Nova Scotia meet growth potential through advisory services, trade development, financing and venture capital.
