Cape Breton exporters prospecting in New England

Dec 2, 2003

HALIFAX - Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation (ECBC) is partnering with Nova Scotia Business Inc. (NSBI) to lead five Cape Breton companies on an export development initiative to New England on December 3-5, 2003.
Under NSBI's Export Prospecting program, the business matchmaking activities will involve three days of scheduled meetings for the Cape Breton companies, and coincide with the annual Boston Tree Lighting ceremony on December 4. Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation is providing a financial contribution toward the participating companies' travel costs, while NSBI is financing the Export Prospector portion of the initiative.

Cape Breton is world renowned for its spectacular scenery, friendly people and unique culture, but Cape Breton is also developing a strong reputation as a competitive business centre, said Rodger Cuzner, M.P. for Bras d'Or-Cape Breton. The export development initiative to New England is an opportunity to profile exporting companies that represent the exceptional quality, skilled workforce and progressive industries that are growing and prospering on Cape Breton Island.

NSBI's Export Prospecting program - the only one of its kind in Canada - is an effective business-to-business export development tool for Nova Scotia companies. Arranging face-to-face selling situations with pre-qualified prospects, and getting our companies in the door by providing the difficult cold calling part of the sales process, is probably the most tangible way NSBI can help our businesses grow through increasing exports,  said Stephen Lund, President and CEO, Nova Scotia Business Inc.

The following Cape Breton companies have been recruited to participate:

AG Research Inc. - Sydney, NS
AG Research Inc. builds business solutions.  Founded in 1991, AG has evolved into an advanced engineering firm that develops comprehensive software solutions tailored to the needs of their clients.  AG develops solid solutions for a broad and diverse clientele to substantially increase their productivity and help them adapt to new technologies and work processes.

DynaGen Technologies Inc. - Sydney, NS
DynaGen Technologies Inc. has become North America's fastest growing manufacturer of power generation controls by offering the best generator controls at the best prices. Amidst surging demand for small-scale power generation systems, DynaGen is emerging as a world-leading supplier of intelligent control products to manufacturers, assemblers, contractors, utilities, and equipment resellers.

East Coast Hydraulics and Machinery - Mulgrave and Sydney, NS
East Coast Hydraulics and Machinery provides its customers with the highest quality of hydraulic engineering, sales and services.  With two locations operating in Cape Breton and Newfoundland, and with more than 35 years experience in fabrication, installation and repair in both industrial and marine industries, they are one of the oldest and most experienced hydraulic companies in Atlantic Canada.
Louisbourg Seafood Ltd. - Louisbourg, NS
Over the past 20 years, Louisbourg Seafoods Ltd. has built a solid reputation along with its expanding ground fish processing and inshore-harvesting operations.  As Cape Breton's largest processor of snow crab and ground fish, Louisbourg Seafoods is a seasoned exporter with a committed focus on the diversification of plant operations, research and development into new and high-in-demand value-added product lines.

R & M Window Manufacturing - Eskasoni, NS
Since 2000, R & M Window Manufacturing has been producing high-quality vinyl window solutions for both residential and commercial markets.   For the residential market, they provide windows for both new construction and renovation projects. R & M Windows provides both stock and custom fit window solutions and works closely with clients to ensure the best possible fit for their window needs.

Nova Scotia Business Inc.'s participation in the Boston Tree Lighting Initiative is aimed at building an effective business-to-business trade development program for Cape Breton exporters.  An Eskasoni company hopes to turn casual contacts into business relationships by meeting with native bands throughout New England. In the United States, there's a lot of native-to-native business activity. They're very supportive and eager to talk to us, said Josh Costello, VP, R&M Windows. We'll be launching a new line of windows in the spring, so the timing is perfect, he added.

Paul Wareham, president and CEO, DynaGen Technologies Inc., said the New England prospecting initiative is a first for his company. It's a new experience for us, but it's one we intend to make the best use of, he said, noting the company aims to increase sales by meeting with existing clients in New England and developing new contacts at meetings the matchmaking service has arranged.
