More jobs are coming to Nova Scotia. An online sports media company, SportsDirect Inc. (SDI), is expanding its operation and workforce with the help of a payroll rebate from Nova Scotia Business Inc. (NSBI).

Economic Development Minister Kerry Morash announced the Halifax-based company's expansion today, April 11, along with Paul Lavers, president and CEO of SDI, and Stephen Lund, president and CEO of NSBI.

"The province is pleased to partner with SportsDirect. This is a distinctly Nova Scotian success story in which a couple of local boys do well on the global stage in the highly competitive information technology business," said Mr. Morash. "With their industry-leading and popular online properties, Paul Lavers and his SportsDirect team are proving and pioneering Nova Scotia's strength as a great place to develop and operate IT businesses."

Under the agreement, up to 165 new positions will be created over the next five years, bringing the number of full-time jobs at SDI up to 300.

"SportsDirect's success to date has been based on an incredibly talented and creative staff as well as a business model that recognizes Nova Scotia's robust operating environment for web-based and technology companies," said Mr. Lavers. "We have achieved market leadership with this approach and are confident that we have only just begun to tap into our growth potential."

The payroll rebate is performance-based and is payable over five years to a maximum of $1.59 million. The average annual salary for these new positions will be $35,800 including benefits.

"NSBI is firmly committed to helping local companies in the information technology sector meet their growth potential," said Mr. Lund. "SportsDirect is a very exciting company with the potential to raise the growth bar for Nova Scotia-developed IT-based companies. With this agreement, we intend to help them get there faster."
