Since launching BlackBerry® in 1999, RIM’s customer base has grown to over 4 million subscribers and is supported on carrier networks around the world. The company’s portfolio of award-winning products, services and embedded technologies are used by thousands of organizations around the world.

In 2005, Nova Scotia’s Information Technology (IT) industry welcomed RIM to Halifax. In front of an exited crowd of 350 people including reporters, business people and politicians, the company announced its upcoming Halifax expansion. RIM chose Halifax as a location of growth with a new 1200-person technical support operations centre. By 2006, the company will begin its Halifax operations and will hire up to 1200 full-time IT positions over the next five years – a big boost to Nova Scotia’s already thriving IT sector. 

Our province’s dedicated and highly skilled workforce played a major role in bringing RIM to Halifax. More than 2000 people in software and technology-related programs graduate from Nova Scotia’s post secondary institutions annually. Not to mention that 14,000 people are employed in the IT sector in Nova Scotia with just over 8300 employed in software and services. Nova Scotia has 11 universities and 13 community college campuses, with half a dozen more in the rest of Atlantic Canada.
